AA battery - The most frequently used

An AA battery is the most commonly used one. It is used in portable devices like torches, speakers, wireless headphones, video games and chargers. It consists of a single electro chemical cell with alkaline, carbon-zinc, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride and lithium-iron-disulphide variants of chemical combinations.

The length of an AA battery is 51millimeter and diameter of 13.5 to 14.5 millimetres. The mass of AA battery varies across its types. It is 15 grams for lithium variant, 23 grams for alkaline variant and 31 grams for nickel metal hydride variant.

An AA battery comes in single-use, rechargeable and speciality batteries. The output voltage of speciality AA battery can rise up to 1.6 V under load. The single use battery produces an output voltage of 1.5 V while rechargeable AA battery gives 1.2 V.

Earlier, the most common form of AA battery was zinc and carbon or zinc and chloride where zinc formed the outer covering and was the cathode while a graphite rod or manganese oxide served as anode. Because of the larger size, an AA battery can deposit more anode material and produces longer charge time.

Care should be taken that AA battery is not exposed to direct sunlight or heat as it may catch fire or the shell may rupture. Even the chemical can get leaked.

Former zinc chloride AA battery was replaced by alkaline AA battery which used an alkali named potassium hydroxide instead of zinc chloride. AA batteries are 2-3 times more capable than the former ones.
